Terms of service
Last updated 18 September 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and the person who runs Kotoba Setto. They cover what the service does, what a paid plan costs, how to cancel, and when you get your money back. Plain language is deliberate: if something here is unclear, write and ask rather than guess.
Who you are dealing with
Kotoba Setto is run by Samuel Andersen, Birkekrogen 6, 9574 Bælum, Denmark. CVR-nr. 46777212. Contact: hello@kotobasetto.com.
What the service is
Kotoba Setto is a web app for building a Japanese vocabulary deck and reviewing it on a spaced-repetition schedule. It looks words up in public dictionaries, helps you turn them into cards, and schedules your reviews. It is a study tool, not a course and not a teacher, and nothing in it is a guarantee that you will learn Japanese.
Your account
- You need an email address you can receive mail at, because that is how you confirm the account and reset your password.
- Keep your password to yourself. An account is for one person.
- You must be at least 13 years old.
- You can delete your account at any time on the Account page. That deletes your deck and your progress with it, so export first if you want a copy.
Free and paid
The free plan gives you every feature of the app and a deck of up to 100 words of your own. Words you take from a starter pack do not count towards that, and neither do words you have archived. Nothing you have made stops working when you reach the limit — you can keep reviewing, editing and studying everything in your deck; what pauses is adding more of your own words until you either archive some or upgrade.
A paid plan removes the limit. Prices include Danish VAT:
- 29 kr. per month, renewing monthly until you cancel.
- 249 kr. per year, renewing yearly until you cancel.
- 599 kr. once — no renewal, see Lifetime access below.
Payment
Payments are handled by Stripe, who process your card details. We never see or store your card number. A receipt is emailed for every charge.
A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period at the price then shown, until you cancel. If a price changes, the new price applies from your next renewal and you will be told by email at least 30 days beforehand, so you can cancel first if you would rather not continue.
Cancelling
You can cancel a subscription at any time from the Account page, which opens Stripe's billing portal. Cancelling stops the next charge; your plan keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then the deck limit applies again. Cancelling is not the same as deleting your account — your words and progress stay where they are.
Your 14-day right to change your mind
As a consumer in the EU you normally have 14 days to withdraw from a distance purchase without giving a reason. Because a paid plan is digital content that starts working the moment you pay, we ask you to tick a box at checkout confirming two things: that you want access to start immediately, and that you understand this means you lose the 14-day right of withdrawal once it does.
If you would rather keep the right, do not tick the box — write to hello@kotobasetto.com instead and we will arrange a purchase that starts after the 14 days have passed.
Refunds beyond that
We would rather refund you than keep money you are unhappy about. Write to hello@kotobasetto.com within 14 days of a charge and say what went wrong, and we will refund it in full, whether or not you ticked the box above. Refunds go back to the card you paid with, normally within five working days. Beyond those 14 days a subscription charge is not refundable, but you can cancel so it does not happen again.
This is on top of your rights under Danish and EU consumer law, which nothing here takes away. If the service is broken or not what was described, you are entitled to a remedy regardless of what this section says.
Lifetime access
One payment removes the deck limit for good, with no renewal and no further charge. We think that is a fairer offer than a subscription for a study tool you may use for a decade. Since "lifetime" is the lifetime of the service rather than a number of years, here is exactly what it covers:
- If the service is ever going to close, everyone gets at least 90 days' notice by email, and export keeps working the whole time — your deck is a file you can take to another app.
- If it closes within 12 months of your lifetime purchase, that purchase is refunded in full without your having to ask.
- If it closes later than that, there is no refund. That is the trade you are making for paying once instead of monthly, and it is better stated here than discovered then.
What belongs to whom
Your deck is yours. The words you add, the notes you write and your review history belong to you, and you can export all of it at any time. We do not claim any right to it and we do not sell or publish it.
The app itself — its code, design and the text we wrote — stays ours. Dictionary definitions, example sentences and kanji data come from public sources under their own licences, listed on the credits page.
Fair use
Do not try to break into other people's accounts, scrape the service, hammer the dictionary endpoints on someone else's behalf, resell access, or use the site to store or send anything illegal. An account doing any of that can be suspended; if we suspend a paid account for this reason we refund the unused part of the period.
Availability
This is a small service run by one person on one server. It will occasionally be down for updates or through failure, and there is no uptime guarantee. Your deck is backed up daily, but keep your own export if the data matters to you. If the service is unavailable for more than seven days in a row, a paid plan is extended by the time it was out.
Liability
The service is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid in the twelve months before it arose. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or anything else that cannot be limited under Danish law — including your statutory rights as a consumer.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them. A change that affects what you pay or what you get is emailed to you at least 30 days before it applies, and you can cancel before it does.
Law and disputes
Danish law governs this agreement, and Danish courts have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the EU, this does not remove the protection of your own country's consumer law or your right to bring a case where you live. Before going to court, write to hello@kotobasetto.com — most things are a misunderstanding and can be sorted in an email. You can also take a complaint to the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority's Center for Klageløsning.
